Asia Cup 2023 - A Quick Overview

The 16th edition of Asia Cup 2023 commenced on 30th August 2023 and concluded with the final match on 17th September 2023. Pakistan served as the official host for the tournament, and Sri Lanka also had the privilege of hosting several Asia Cup matches. This marked the first instance of two countries jointly handling the hosting duties.

Six Asian teams were part of this tournament, with Sri Lanka as the defending champions and Nepal making its debut. Let's have a recap of the matches from each stage:

Group Stage Matches

Initially, the 6 teams were divided into 2 groups. Group A had Pakistan, India, and Nepal. At the same time, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan made Group B. Persistent rain and unfavorable weather conditions heavily impacted all the matches, including the highly anticipated India vs. Pakistan encounter, which ended without a result. At the conclusion of this stage, four teams advanced to the Super Fours, while Afghanistan and Nepal exited the tournament.

Super Fours

The top 2 teams from each group qualified for the Super Fours, where every team had to play with the other 3 and gain maximum points to qualify for finals. The fans' excitement was at its peak. Everyone supported their teams; however, the Pakistan and India fans were waiting for the big match again: Pakistan vs. India.

The first match was between Pakistan and Bangladesh, which Pakistan won. Next was between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, which Sri Lanka won. Though Bangladesh still had to play against India, unfortunately, they were out of the tournament.

Then came the BIG match: Pakistan vs India. But as soon as it started, it was all like sizzles with no steak! The number 1 ODI team, Pakistan, collapsed after the match started. None of their players performed well, and the talented Indian cricket team defeated them by 228 runs.

Now, it was the time for India vs. Sri Lanka, where both the teams had to win to qualify for the finals. It was an exciting game with many ups and downs, but the result favored India. They won by 41 runs and qualified for the Final.

Another intense match was between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, where, again, the winner would qualify for the final. Unfortunately, the match was hugely interrupted by the rain, but both teams put in an effort to play well. In a tense match, using the DLS method, Sri Lanka secured victory by two wickets and qualified for the Final.

The last match of the Super Fours was between Bangladesh and India. The result of the match doesn't matter as Asia Cup 2023 already had its final teams: India and Sri Lanka. This was an intriguing match, with Bangladesh staging a comeback to upset India by a 6-run victory.

The Asia Cup 2023 Final

India and Sri Lanka eagerly wanted to mark history and become the Asia Cup 2023 Champions. Sri Lanka was the defending champions, while India wanted to break the 5-year old drought of failing to win a multi-team tournament.

The Final was held on 17th September 2023 at R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. The fans of both teams gathered on the ground to see some fantastic performances. Both the captains went for the toss, and the Sri Lanka captain won and elected to bat first.

But that was the only thing that had gone from his side that day. The exceptional Indian bowlers ruled over the Sri Lankan batters and sent all of them back to the pavilion at a total of 50 runs.

With a low target on the board, India clinched the Asia Cup 2023 title in just 6.1 overs. This was the biggest ODI win for India and the second-biggest win by any team in cricket history.
