To sort the issues, the Hybrid model was introduced. It was decided for the first time that 2 countries, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, would host some tournament matches. According to the Asia Cup fixtures, Pakistan will host 4 of the matches, while Sri Lanka will have the hosting opportunity to host 9 matches.

Asia Cup 2023 Teams and Schedule

The countries playing in the Asia Cup 2023 include Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal. This is the Nepal cricket team's first time playing in the Asia Cup. The team qualified for the Asia Cup 2023 after winning the title of ACC Men’s Premier Cup in Nepal in May.

For the initial group stage of the Asia Cup tournament, the teams are divided into 2 groups of 3. There will be a single round-robin format for all three teams in each group. By the end of the first round, the top two teams will qualify for the next round, “Super Fours.” The top 2 teams will face each other in the Asia Cup 2023 Final match.

This time, India, Nepal, and Pakistan are part of Group A, and Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka are in Group B. Moreover, the most anticipated rivalry match between Pakistan and India is scheduled on 2nd September in Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

Asia Cup Teams and Background

Let's learn about the teams and cricket players who are their strengths and can contribute to them.

  • Pakistan

The number one ODI team in Men’s ICC rankings, Pakistan, is led by the number 1 ICC ODI batsman, Babar Azam, who has been a nightmare for other teams participating in the Asia Cup 2023.

Pakistan cricket team has recently won a series against Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, which is why they are a massive threat to other teams. Moreover, the team is also familiar with the playing style that helped them to prepare for the Asia Cup 2023.

  • Sri Lanka

The co-host and defending champion of the Asia Cup 2023 has recently won the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier event in Zimbabwe - where the team has won all 8 matches against lower-ranking cricket teams.

Despite a 10-match winning streak in ODIs, Sri Lanka began the year with 0-3 and 0-2 series losses to India and New Zealand, respectively. It also lost against Afghanistan in the first ODI but bounced back and won the series by 2-1.

  • Afghanistan

Considering facing the upsets before every cricket tournament, Afghanistan is expected to bounce back and perform better than before in every international tournament. All the players in the team are indeed very hardworking, but unfortunately, the team’s luck is never on the winning side.

Though the team won a series against Bangladesh but faced an upset of 3-0 against Pakistan recently, which made them a bit disheartened, the Afghanistan team can give their rivals a tough time in every series.

  • India

The Men in blue are ranked 3rd in the ICC Men’s ODI Rankings. They have recently won a series against West Indies by 2-1 after losing to Australia by 1-2 at home.

Though the Rohit Sharma-led team began their year with a win against New Zealand and Sri Lanka by 3-0 at home, it is still a question of whether they will be able to lift the trophy of the Asia Cup this year since they have been a team with 7 Asia Cup trophies.

  • Bangladesh

The Bengali Tigers have robustly played the 50-50 format ODI cricket matches. Last year, the team held the pride of beating India in a series by 2-1 and also managed to win against England but lost the series by 1-2.

Furthermore, the team also won 2 series against Ireland, one at their home and the other away; however, the Tigers faced the shock of losing a series against Afghanistan by 1-2 at Afghan home a few months ago. The team is expected to use its strengths in the Asia Cup 2023 and upset some great competitors this year.

  • Nepal

Led by a 20-year-old, Nepal is debuting its Asia Cup career this year. Nepal has won 15 out of 20 ODI matches this year, which has given a lot of confidence to the players.

The team is also known to show some stellar performance in the World Cup League 2 event, where it won 11 out of 12 matches and secured a position to appear in the qualifier round for the ICC Men’s ODI Cricket World Cup in Zimbabwe. While playing the Asia Cup for the first time, Nepal cricket team fans hope to see their strengths and improve their ICC Cricket rankings.
